The IEBN Podcast recently welcomed John Kheir, founder of HK Construction, to discuss his journey from military service to becoming a leader in the construction industry. From historical restorations to modern home transformations, John blends craftsmanship with innovation to create functional and beautiful spaces.
The Four Elements of a Beautiful Space
During the interview at the historic Edwards Mansion in Redlands, John shared his perspective on what makes a space truly beautiful:
• Lighting: More than just illumination, lighting sets the mood and enhances ambiance.
• Texture: Incorporating materials like wood, metal, and stone adds character and depth.
• Design: Small architectural changes, such as adding a window or repositioning a wall, can completely transform a space.
• Time: The natural aging of materials over time gives a space a unique charm that new construction lacks.
From Finance to Construction
John’s path to construction was unconventional. After serving in the military, he spent 13 years in the finance industry, managing call centers and training teams. In 2015, he flipped a few properties with his brother and realized he could bring a fresh approach to contracting. He obtained his license and built HK Construction, focusing on residential and commercial renovations.
Balancing Aesthetics and Functionality
Inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, John believes in harmonizing design and function. He works closely with clients to blend materials and layout choices that maximize both beauty and usability. He prefers working with homeowners who trust his expertise, allowing him to be creative while delivering exceptional results.
The Business Philosophy: Honesty, Humility, and Hunger
John attributes his success to his “Triple H” philosophy:
• Honesty: Being transparent with clients and acknowledging limitations.
• Humility: Asking for help when needed and continuously learning.
• Hunger: Staying motivated to innovate and improve every day.
A Client-Centered Approach
HK Construction specializes in home renovations, additions, and commercial projects. John emphasizes clear communication, on-time delivery, and maintaining a clean worksite. His team offers free estimates, ensuring clients understand their options before committing to a project.
For homeowners looking to enhance their space, John advises viewing their home as a sanctuary—one that deserves thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship.
